Japan revised its government fees for changes of status of residence, extensions of period of stay, and permanent residence permission on October 1, 2026.
For changes and extensions, the fee now depends on the period of stay granted and whether the application is submitted in person or online.

Fee Reductions in Certain Circumstances
A fee reduction may be available to applicants who meet specified requirements relating to both financial hardship and humanitarian considerations.
For eligible applicants:
- Fees for a change of status or an extension granting a period of stay exceeding three months may be reduced to ¥10,000.
- The fee for permanent residence permission may be reduced to ¥20,000.
Financial hardship alone does not automatically qualify an applicant for a reduction. Eligibility depends on the applicable criteria and individual circumstances.
